With reference to the back up light and starter inhibitor switch as David Luke
says the switch is located on the left hand side of the gearbox to get the
switch out takes about 5min you don't have to drop the gearbox.  If you pull
back the carpet on the left hand side of the gearbox tunnel you will find a
plate held on with 4 screws remove the screws and you have direct access to
the switch.   Before removing switch find the two wires that operate the
lights (Colours in workshop manual) make sure ignition is on and join wires
together if they don't work then it will probably be the connecting block
located under the car not far from the starter motor.    You can try resetting
the switch by removing it from the gearbox and with a pair of pliers pull the
plunger out till it stops and then refit.
