My '73 tach uses the standard 3rd wire connection to the coil; do you think
your torroid connection is really original? I remember building a current
sensing tach adapter for a VW bug many years ago, because I didn't want to
run another wire all the way back that could potentially short out the
ignition or radiate ignition noise. But why put one on a Stag? Oh well,
could be another Stag personality trait, I guess! As I recall, my adapter
needed the torroid, two transistors and a power regulator to get a clean
signal for the tach. Also, torroid primary polarity was critical (try
reversing yours?)
