Well David
It sounds well scientific, but in my experience intermittent electrical
activity is usually temperature related and connected with disconnection if
you'll pardon this turn of phrase.
I think there is a loose connection or a bad spade type connection somewhere
that disconnects when it gets a little warm, somewhere in the engine bay. 
How intermittent is the rev counter and at what temperature does it occur?
