FWIW, my 88 Honda Shuttle never had squealing brakes for 7 years until
the pads were replaced one day in a service. I complained to the service
agents (Honda) who cleaned them up and put some anti squeal gel on the
plates. Two months later the squeal reappeared and so it went back to
honda. It kept going back to honda every till they finally realised it
was cheaper to replace the pads than to have me annoy them every two
months (they are a quick lot???) and bingo the squealing stopped. These
new pads were asbestos free, as were the ones that squealed.

Perhaps the squealing could also be put down to the brake pad
manufacturer??

It is interesting that you note that the performance improved with the
asbestos.

Do you know who the respective manufacturers of your brake pads were? It
would be interesting to compare with Peter Howells experience using the
Unipart ones.

The above is based on actual results, but here's my theory for what it's
worth.
The Stag was designed in an era where asbestos pads were the norm. Using

modern asbestos-free pads will produce less than satisfactory results.
