Re: Keys

Andrew,

bad luck with the keys. I have just put my fuel filler cap and boot lock
back on (on-going restoration) and suspect that the boot, should the lock
picking fail, will be more trouble than you expect.

The two screws that hold the push-button from the outside won't help you
much because the lock mechanism pushes on a rod, which is (at least on my
car) clipped to a pivot that transfers the action to vertical and thus
activates the boot release. While you may get the screws out, the lock
mechanism wont come out.

Should you get the boot open, the fuel filler is relatively simple to remove
from inside the boot, and once on a bench, you should be able to punch out
the retaining pin that the flap pivots on. I used about 2 inches of coat
hanger wire as a drift. Once the flap is loose, the lock mechanism comes out
easily.

Just as an aside, I assume from your posting that you can get the steering
lock removed and have a source for the shear bolts to replace it on the
steering column. Does anyone know if these are available in the UK and how
difficult a job it is ?

Thanks,

Ross

Subject: Keys

I have done the unbelievably stupid act of losing my one and only set of
keys for the Stag. Fortunately the doors were unlocked and I can get
into it to change the lock barrels on the doors and ignition. The boot is
locked but it seems possible to replace the lock mechanism from the
outside although at vast expense. The only one I might have trouble with
is the fuel filler cap but if I cant get at it by removing the cap itself
and dismantling it from the back I suppose I can always drill it out.
However before I do all this I was wondering if there was any way of
getting a new set of keys by reference to Commission Numbers or the like.
Does anybody know if the factory kept this sort of record and if so does
it still exist.

Thanks in advance

A very embarrassed Andrew Wood.
