Re: Silicone Brake fluid
Hi Peter
Still waiting for a reply from Pop-Mech. Where did you get your copy, I
didn't think it was on sale in the UK.
I still believe the 'bottle' price is the major factor which is skewing the
whole issue. You must appreciate that, having worked with more than one
vehicle manufacturer as I have, the thought of saving just one penny is a
major issue and I am certain 'unit cost' figures very highly in why the
fluid is not generally used by VM's.
Also, the manufacturers have a vested interest in the fluid being changed
at regular intervals. Virtually all franchised car dealers are on the
bread-line (in the UK and Europe at least) and it is in the VM's interest
to have the car owners go to the dealer to spend money on having the fluid
changed, to provide the dealer with some more income - it also enables the
VM and the dealer to keep in contact with the customer.
The above sounds cynical and it is - but true. You can bet that if the
VM's suddenly decide they can do without the cost of dealers, they will
bring out maintenance-free cars in a flash. In that case, I would want to
know what brake fluid they use, and if it EVER needs to be changed. I'm
not sure how long it is going to be before we find out the anser to that
one, and it may be that an entirely different type of braking system will
be fitted to cars before then - but it WILL be cheaper per car, bet your
bottom dollar.
No degree in economics but I know just how the industry works. Saturn
dealers do not reply please.
