Re: Master Brake cylinder
Hello Russel,
Does the pedal stop its downward motion when you push on it, drop slowly to the
floor, or can you pump it up and then it fades away? Is the fluid dirty? Do
air bubbles come out of the master cylinder when you press on the pedal? Dirt
is a sure sign of corrosion in the system, and water, Air bubbles is a leak.
If it stops then fades, could be air in the system. If it drops slowly to the
floor, there is a leak. If you can pump it up then fades, again, air in the
system.
Don't fret too much...yet. It could be that the system needs to be flushed and
bled with new fluid. BUT, do not wait! If you can not do the work yourself,
have a brake specialist look at it, now! Lots of brake specialty shops and
garages around. Bleeding the brakes and flush with new fliud could be as little
as $35-$50. You could also have a leaking brake line, or cracked flexible
rubber hose.
The expensive side is like this (approximate costs USD from the brake shop):
Rebuilt Booster Servo- $125-$150
Rebuilt master cylinders $85-$125
Rebuilt calipers (front) $125 each
Rebuilt slave cylinders (rear), $45-60 each
Hoses, $10-$15 each
Then include labor, about $40-$60 an hour, or by the brake job set price plus
parts, and a warranty.
If you have the ability to do the work yourself, try Apple Hydraulics in
Calverton, NY (800) 882-7753 Rebuild prices are:
Calipers $85 each w/ SS pistons
Brake master with brass/Bronze sleaves &65
Brake slaves with brass/bronze sleaves $40-$60
call for the servo rebuild.
Also chech White Post Restorations (504) 837-1140
http://www.whitepost.com
Or you can do your own cylinder work if the cylinders are not pitted. Rebuild
kits are about $10 for the brake slaves, $25 for the brake master, and $75 for
the servo, $10 for a bood drill operated hone at the local auto parts store. Do
your homework first, and have a Repair Manual.
The alternative, a bad highway situation. Point is, get it taken care of soon.
