Re: Found another '73. Overdrive question.

Hello Charles,
Great Find! I am curious about the no rust. Better take a closer
look, I'll bet there is bondo somewhere if it is a South east Stag.
Look closely at the bottom of the "A" and B" posts at the sills, front
radiator support, front wheel arches.

The OD switch on Stags is on the top of the shift knob. According to
the original parts book, that is the only type produced for the Stag. I
have seen a Stag or two with the OD lever on the steering column, but I
do not believe it was original. Laycock was the manufacturer of the
Type A and Type J OD's. There are some USA members on the list that
have converted a standard 4 speed to an OD, which requires an adapter
plate and tail shaft change. Try Mike Coffey of the Triumph Stag Club
and VTR Stag Consultant for advice on this work. If you check your
local Triumph Club, I'll bet you will find at least one or two TR6 OD
conversions done by the owners, same OD unit and same basic
transmission..

From my experience, Stags with OD's are rare in the US, and those that
came with OD's were "Type J" with the solenoid enclosed. It is
unmistakeable to recognize an OD on a manual transmission as there is no
tapered tail shaft housing directly under the shifter. The OD unit is
cylinder shaped (sort of) fitting under the rear of the shifter, about
12" in diameter, eyeball guess. Normal configuration of the majority of
USA Federal Stags were Automatics and 4 speed manual transmissions.

In my humble opinion, yours for speculation. Hope it helps.
