To make a painfully long story short (well, relatively so):

THE PAST:

I recently changed out a power steering rack for a rebuilt one that I've
had sitting
around for about 5 (!) years.  One of the external tubes had gotten badly
bent up and was suffering a cracked fitting.  In the attempt to change out
the ones from
my old rack, I succeeded in stripping the fitting pretty badly.  Ted Rose
responded
to my earlier plea for help and supplied me with the set of 3 from an old
rack that
he had sitting around.

THE PRESENT:

So I got everything reassembled and back in but it doesn't work.  It's like
having no power steering.  So I wonder:  Is that old (but rebuilt) rack bad
or did I mess something up in the reinstallation.

THE QUESTION:

On the control valve there are 4 threaded holes for tubes.  The ones on the
righthand side go to the PS pump.  That leaves an upper and lower hole on
the left-hand side.

On my old rack, the short tube goes into the LOWEST hole and to the  2nd
closest
hole (to the control valve)  on the main body of the rack.  The longer tube
goes into the HIGH hole and to the 3rd closest hole in the body.  The last
tube goes from the 1st closest hole on the main body to the furthest (4th).

However:

The manual shows the short tube coming from the HIGHEST hole and the longer
tube from the LOWEST.

I fit the ones that Ted sent as on my old rack, not as in the manual.  I
have my doubts
as to whether or not they would even reach the other way.

Anyone know which way is right???????????????

OH, AND BTW:

I did prime the PS pump by hand first.  But when I started it up I was
confronted with a pretty noticeable wail.  Shutting down I discovered the
pump
was dry.  Could I have hurt that????

THE FUTURE:

Continued transportation via bike?
