Nick.

If you use the new type seals which have a spring inside, it is important
that the open side of the seal faces the oil.

From my experience the seals have enough "undersizing" to allow for any
scouring of the quill shaft as long as it is not greatly worn.

There was an article in the SOC magazine a few years ago where the writer
was suggesting that the tension in the spring  can be incrreased by
removing it and shorten the spring so as to increase the tension.

Never done it or tried, just a thought
