As I recall on my '73 T35, if you remove the pan with the dipstick in
place, you should see that the high level mark is just below the gasket
surface of the pan.
I had a high milage th400 in a '74 Trans-Am that did the same thing as
yours, that was completely cured by changing the fluid every 100 miles or
so 4 times in a row (most of the fluid stays in the torque converter and so
is hard to change).
It didn't work on a similar problem I had with a '68 Ford Bronco (wound up
doing a rebuild), but it's relatively cheap & easy to try!
