Yes, the hammer ploy is a good one and works 90+% of the time.

If it doesn't work, it is because the contacts oxidise badly if not used. 
So if the hammer ploy doesn't work, try taking the Bakelite cover off and
using very fine emery paper to clear the oxidation.
