In the case of rear wings, new wings are not very accurate, so a patch
repair such as yours is generally preferable unless the rust id very bad
indeed.

It is common practice to remove the minimum of metal, consistent with
getting rid of all the rust.  It is also usual to find a piece of new or
used rust-free metal and cut and bend it to roughly the right shape, and
then weld it in place.

Because the shaping is not accurate, and the welded joints are seldom all
that smooth it is customary to palce the metal slightly below the normal
contour and fill with filler.  Provided rust is not present, this is a
durable wya of doing things.

Strictly speaking, the ideal repair would be to buy a new wing, then cut
out of it the piece of metal requred to fill the cleaned up gap, then butt
weld it into position, then grinding off any surface imperfections to the
original contours.  Some people will do this but it is a very highly
skilled/expensive process and prone to difficulty as the application of
localised heat can cause quite a lot of surface warping/distortion - whichi
in turn might need a combination of grinding down and filling.
