I had a mysterious problem with my 72 Mk1 which turned out to be the Allison
(now Crane)  sending unit.To solve the problem, I rebuilt carbs, went nuts
looking for intake leaks, and finally in desperation, I installed a set of
points and the original ignition system. Voila! Problem solved!. I packed up
the old system and sent it to the manufacturer who replaced the sending unit
. I haven't re-installed it yet (6 years since this happened).  Mike Moore
