LEGISLATIVE ALERT
New York Introduces Bill to Restrict Motor Vehicle Lights and Lamps
A bill (S.B. 4837) has been introduced in the New York legislature
that would prohibit the installation of a vehicle lamp or light unless
approved by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. The bill authorizes the
commissioner to regulate maximum candlepower, location and placement,
aim of light beam and the times, places and conditions under which the
lamps or lights may be used. This bill has the potential to affect
off-roaders, street rodders and customizers, even those looking to
restore an older vehicle. Are you ready to see your right to accessorize
or improve your vehicle taken away?
We Urge You to Contact Your State Legislators to Oppose This Bill
S.B. 4837 seeks to legislate New York State standards for all vehicle
lights and lamps, even those already regulated by federal standards.
S.B. 4837 could effectively lead to an outright ban on fog lamps,
driving lights, marker lights and all other lighting accessories.
S.B. 4837 would even impose standards even on mandatory equipment like
headlamps.
S.B. 4837 could lead to restricted use of optional safety lighting even
in off-road or hazardous road and weather conditions.
This bill tramples on the rights of vehicle enthusiasts in New York.
