Yes, they will. Many years ago, I was travelling on an interstate in a heavily (over)loaded Scout. I was
going at what felt like top speed (45 MPH) in the right lane---when out of the corner of my eye I noticed
I was about to be overtaken by something that wasn't making any noise at all. I turned my head to see what
kind of stealthy sports car was gaining on me.

All at the same time:
I saw a familiar looking wheel rolling along side my driver's door...
I thought "What the h_ll is going..."
The rear of the car dipped down and a REALLY awful noise began.

Fortunately I had enough sense to stay away from the brake pedal and just scrape to a stop on the shoulder
of the highway. The rear axle was worn down to ruin---and I have since become fanatical aboout checking
lug nuts.
