:When the truth serum kicked in, "John Stricker" <[email protected]>
blurted
:out...
No, actually, it was a fit of depression after watching my most beloved
KState Wildcats lose the Big 12 Championship to A&M in OT on a blown call,
but the results were the same.
And we won't even go to the place I was today after seeing them get passed
up for ALL the major bowl bids. If someone can explain to me how a bowl
committee can take teams ranked 7 and 15 in the BCS over one that is ranked
3 with only one loss by 4 points to a team ranked 10th in the nation in a
champions...........Oh, never mind. Just hit my thumb with a hammer so I
don't think about it anymore.
:
:SO... as you said John... there's no problem swapping EGR for non-EGR heads
:and intake manifolds.
All of the manifolds and heads that I have indicate this, but I don't have
any square bore 4V at all to look at. I do have both 2V and 4V Spread Bore
EGR and 2V non-EGR and I can't see that there should be a problem.
:
:One unrelated thing I do want to explore is what are the *exact*
differences
:between improved and non-improved cooling 392 heads. Now that I have heads
on
:hand of both styles, I want to examine them side by side. I'd like to
figure
:out if the two styles of heads could be modified in some way to make them
:interchange.
When you find this out, let us know. I have no improved cooling models to
compare it too. For those of you that DO run IC engines, Do they run any
cooler? With a properly cleaned and functioning cooling system I've really
never had an overheating problem with an IHC 304/345/392. I also haven't
had any head cracking problems or anything like that (similar to the GM 6.2
diesel which has "0" tolerance for overheating).
I have noticed that the 392 non IC engines tend to have a greater amount of
taper than I would expect in a similar 350 Chevy for example. Was the
cooling situation that IH was trying to fix a block overheating problem?
:
:>None of my 345's or 392's have ever had the little tin tabs on them to
hold
:>the valve cover gaskets in place but that doesn't mean that some of them
:>didn't have them. It would be nice.
:
:Maybe it's only a feature of the FelPro gaskets??? I purchased a set of
:FelPro intake manifold gaskets and they had the tabs.
I used FelPro gaskets and specify them exclusively. The tabs are on the
intake gaskets but in my case didn't help because I didn't have the intake
manifold on yet. It wouldn't have mattered anyway as the area that I
generally have a problem with is on the bottom of the cover in the little
curves inward. Actually, a little adhesive and some care (and a better
memory, it's awful to get old) is all it takes to get them to stay.
:
:>So far I've only got about 100 miles on it but it starts and runs well.
:>I'll check the mileage over the next week or so and see if it helped or
hurt
:>to go with the 392. My gut feeling is that it will make better mileage
now,
:>and lot's less oil burned.
:
:Please post your results to the Digest.
:
:Thanks,

:John L.
I will John. I'm really curious about the mileage. When I drive it now, I
feel like I'm barely touching the accelerator at 65mph. This would be a
really good tow rig now.
Oh, BTW, just to prove that no good deed ever goes unpunished, I came back
from town this afternoon, set the cruise, and the turn signal stalk/cruise
control button spit it's guts out all over the floor. I guess he was just
trying to tell me that he was still a Binder.
