Back when my Scout was new, I had a habit of driving off and leaving the

gas cap on top of the fuel pump at the station.

Or, if you live in the city and have a lockable gas cap (sort of
mandatory here), just keep the key in the cap and set it on your roof,
back seat, etc. Can't tell you how many times I've sat back down behind
the wheel and patted both pockets before I remember.
