The parts book shows the same shift decal for both the close and wide
ratio T-19's--751811R3, so I suspect they both have the same pattern.
Reverse is to the right and down, beside 4th gear. The T-18 has a
different decal, 751160R3, so it may be right and up, which agrees with
what you reported--it's been 20 years since I owned one and I don't
remember.

Well, it sounds like you've been having head butting contests with Tom M
which may have affected a lot of things, but I'm going to suggest that
you don't have a granny gear low. IH did not use a wide ratio T-18, so
if you do have one, someone had to swap it in. The 4.02 low gear in the
"close" version is really pretty low, even with 2.82 axles and 29" tires
I often don't use low on the street, with 31" it's pretty much necessary.
The 6.32 low of the wide ratio is actually lower that what you have with
a close ratio in 2nd gear, low range (2.41 X 2.03) so I think it would be
easy to confuse them. The wide ratio was introduced to give a true
low-low gear to Scouts equipped with the single speed chain drive
transfer case. The non-synchro low is what distinguishes the T-18 from
the T-19's.

Not if it's the original transmission--the T-98 was not used in the Scout
at all.
Hope this helps you sort it out.
