For what it's worth I just picked up 98' M3/4 for 22k. Very nice Georgia car 
with 49,000 miles. I did quite an extensive search and found 95's for 15k all 
the way to 28k for overpriced 98's. IMHO with the addition of the E46 body 
style the E36's have become a much better value. If you take your time you 
can find a  nice vehicle for 22k or under, and that beats the heck out of a 
new Altima!
