<E28> car stalling 535i .. additional history.

Something else just came to mind. Recently before this issue arose, when I
would take long extended drives (1.5 hours or more) on the highway, I would
start to experience something strange at low rpm and at idle when I came to
a stop light or whatever. The RPM's wouldnt go below 1100 or so, and would
sometimes stick at 1500. If I let out the clutch the car would move
forward, without any gas at all and wouldnt stall. I could actually drive
around with no gas at low speed. I tried depressing the clutch at high
speed, and the rpms would stick around there. If I was driving at a higher
gear and let slow to a lower speed in the same gear letting the rpms get to
between 1500 and 2000 the car wouldnt slow anymore and it would pull along
without any accelerator pressure. It was an intermittent thing and once the
car sat and cooled off for a few hours it would go away. I was thinking at
the time that it could be a throttle position sensor based on my feul
injection experience with mustangs about 6 years ago.
The throttle would also intermittently hunt up and down between 500 and 1500
every once in a while while at a stop light. Also pointing to a TPS issue.
Is the ICV the equivalent to a throttle position sensor?

Could these problems all be attributed to a faulty ICV and syptoms leading
to failure, which I seem to have now?

Any input would be great

  Ron,

I recently replaced my ICV because I thought it was faulty. As I remember
the idle is supposed to go up to 2000-3000 rpm when the engine is running
and the ICV is disconnected and there is supposed to be a slight buzzing
sound with the ignition on and with the car not running Mine had the
buzzing but no increase in RPM's so I replaced it and the new one does
the
same thing. I could have a problem in the electronics with the signal
that
  goes to the ICV.

I'm guessing it's not your ICV but I could be wrong. I cleaned mine out a
couple times with carb cleaner and it seemed to improve a problem I had
with
  acceleration.

  Good Luck

  Ok, Thanks,

I thought thats where it might be, When I move the throttle linkage even
slightly, I can hear the throttle switch click. So I think its working
fine. Its the ICV thats not clicking thats making me wonder about it.

    Ron,

The throttle switch is near the intake manifold. It is mounted on the
rubber air intake pipe directly opposite the throttle linkage (towards
the
    front of the car).

There are a couple of screws that allow you to position the switch and
change the point at which contact is made. You might try adjusting it.

    Good Luck,
