     Try prying up the little cap on the top of the shifter there might be 
     a phillips screw holding the knob on.  After unscrewing the screw, you 
     will still have to pull hard.

I need to replace the large rubber grommet seal around the shift lever. 
Bentley instructs: "remove knob".   Regular shop people say it just 
pulls off, but with difficulty. So having pulled as hard as I can with 
no result, I have two questions:
1.  What is a do-able method for removing the knob to allow removal and 
installation of new rubber grommet?
2.  How do I deal with the wire that comes through the grommet?  Do I 
have to disconnect something under the car?
     
Your suggestions appreciated.
