 Less than a year ago I had the auto tran on an 86 535i rebuilt.  Today the
 old symptoms are back.  Slippage in forward gears, burnt smell to the fluid,
 and when revving with the brake on the rpm goes easily to 5000.  How can the
 clutches be bad already?  Can something else be wrong?  What? Please help.
 The fluid levels is fine and the car has not been abused. >>

1. Improper actuating open/close pistons in valve body.
2. Springs on clutch packs weak
3. Brake bands replaced?
4. Torque converter bad
5. Working and Modulating pressures not set to factory specs after rebuild.
6. Exterior of trans. "turnkey" for shift quality left to "soft" (see:slip)
positioning, should have been to "firm" direction to eliminate heat buildup
and clutces frying.
7. Torque converter holds almost 1/2 of total fluid content. Did the people
who rebuilt it take the torque converter down and completely drain it?, or did
they leave that leftover burnt fluid in it, only to contaminate the "newly
rebuilt" transmission.
8. Were ALL the clutchPACKS changed , or were just some facing discs changed
(see:cheaped rebuild). No insult here. Just looking for facts to help.

........ remember, on a rebuilt trans, ALWAYS drive it gently for the first
500 miles, and do not intentionally make it downshift while driving. This does
not let the clutch facings/bands break in correctly...............
