Subject: Uneven tyre wear?
My '85 635 CSi has uneven tyre wear at the front, the inner edge
is wearing quicker. The car is lowered but not much, the
problem existed before the new suspension anyway.
Would too much toe in or toe out do this or must it be
camber related? Could I tie it down to too little toe in,
too little toe out or could it be either?
Wrong tyre pressure would affect only the middle or BOTH
edges right? I use 2.4 bar at the front.
How do shade tree mechanics like me check toe in? Point the
wheels straight ahead and try to measure the distance from
front-front vs rear-rear? Sounds too primitive.>>>>>>>>>>>>
Primitive or not, that's all the chap at the garage does. The tricky part is
that the amount of toe-in should be equal on both sides. Your tire wear is
most likely a toe-in problem - unless an accident moved some of the mounting
points. If memory serves, you need a little toe-in. That is the only normal
adjustment.
To check yourself, you need a long U shaped device which will reach up the
inside of the tires at the front and back, with pins on top that reach
horizontally in to touch the rim at the same spot front and rear. The rear
should be wider than the front. For the time and effort to build such a
device, why not trundle down tot the local alignment shop and get the toe-in
set properly.
