re. What is this E stuff?

BMW uses two different conventions in naming their cars.  The first is
the internal classification, having the form Exx.  "E" stands for
"Entwicklung", German for development.  There are several sources on
the web for deciphering E codes, as well as a list in the Enthusiast's
Companion.

The second naming convention is the one the public sees.  This
consists of the model line (3, 5, 6, 7, 8) followed by the engine
size, in liters.  This is a bit misleading, though, as the recent 323s
have had 2.5 liter motors.  Additionally, the 325e had a 2.7 liter
motor.  There are other examples out there of misnaming.

Another classification you might hear referred to is the motor naming
system.  All BMW engines are coded in the form Mxx.  ///M engines are
Sxx.  These codes are sometimes followed by a Bxx where the xx is the
engine size. (Does BMW still do this?).  For example, the M20/B25 is
the 2.5 L SOHC baby six.
