Pardon my ignorance, but what's a longblock and shortblock? What are their
 inherent differences?

 Thanks for any enlightenment.

K C,

Last I heard:
                       1) Short block = engine block with all rotating and
rocipricating units installed
                       2) Long block = same as above with the addition of the
complete cylinder head installed.

Neither one comes with any accessories - intake, exhaust, water pump,
generator, ac.

1) is good for rods going through the side of the block because of a spun
bearing.

2) is a good choice if you sink a valve

There are other ways to repair these problem but doing it this way is the
fastest.
