Weird brake pedal feel

Occasionally I'll step on the brake pedal (E34) and it will literaly feel
"broken."  The brakes work and the car stops fine, but it's as if the pedal
had snapped in the process.  I can feel a slight pop in the first few
degrees of pedal travel, and the pedal briefly feels limp.  But the pressure
it always there when I push harder.  This pedal pop is what confused me the
last time I thought I engaged the ABS because it felt like I had pushed the
pedal right through the floorboard!  It's only happened 3 times in the
period of a few months, but this worries me.  Any ideas?
