I saw two kinds of broken waterpumps:
1. Good (not shaking) bearing, but leaking
rear seal - i belive it's because of grease
lack between seals.
2. No leaks, but bad bearing - tight belt or
long use.
Some observations:
Gasket never leaks - it's tinny paper gasket.
If it leaks from one of two small oil holes -
rear seal is bad. Rear seal is wiered pressin
construction - not repearable.
If it leaks from under pulley - front seal is bad,
'Heynes' says you can get front seal and replace
it - take off front pulley and replace seal,
but it's really hard to belive that rear seal is
ok, but there is leak - only way for water to
reach front seal is thru rear. And it's big pain to
press out pulley connector from shaft.
So get new one. I don't think there is big price
difference between BMW and aftermarket types.
When i got new pump, i saw that it wasn't greased
inside - better add some grease thru holes.
Oleg.
