Hate to have to tell you this but the soft "whirling" sound that you
referred to is not a natural characteristic, at least not in the three
318is's that I've driven recently.
Mine whines a bit like an electric motor up to about 3000rpm. It just
isn't bad enough to take back to the dealer but I notice it most of the
time. If I could disconnect the fan belt I could perhaps identify the
culprit, but my '95 model has spring loaded belt tensioner and I can't
work out how to back it off. Also I was hoping that the noise would
sortof go away as the engine loosened up!
