[bmw] E34 Door lock problem

My '89 E34 535i's battery died and now I can't open the driver or passenger 
door locks. The trunk will open, but nothing associated w/ turning the key 
in the lock works on the doors. Is getting under the hood (how do you do 
that) the only way to get the door open?
