520i - Fuel and temp gauges

The temp gauge on my 1983 520i has been playing up for the past few
weeks.  Sometimes works and sometimes it does not.  As of today the fuel
gauge is now doing the same thing.  Additionally when they are both
working the gauges now tend to flicker around a bit.  Could this be a
loose connection or is there some kind of electronic box that may be
failing?
